On July 20 newcomer Charles Kelly was elected to the District 6 seat on the Iredell-Statesville Board of Education, defeating incumbent Brucie Serene.

The school system’s web site, updated as of November 16, still lists Serene as a member of the school board.

The Merger Plan of the Iredell County and Statesville City Schools states that school board members shall be elected in the May Primary and sworn into office on July 1 (section 3b).

This year the primary was delayed until July. Under such circumstances, almost any court would rule that members be sworn in as soon after the election as reasonably possible.

Kelly says he has been given no explanation for the delay, but that he has been informed he will be sworn into office at the board’s December meeting.
