“We have not always agreed with
the current county commissioners. They have spent money we believe they
should not have spent and have made little attempt to control the
burgeoning residential growth that is overwhelming our infrastructure.
“But in evaluating the
commissioners, it is only fair to bear in mind that theirs is a difficult
job. They must deal with the demands of growth, un-funded state mandates,
and pressure from special-interest groups...
“Considering the challenges they
face, commissioners Johnson, Williams, and Norman could have done a lot
worse. They deserve credit for holding the line on tax increases... They
have had the good sense to avoid major missteps [such as funding commuter
rail] that have plagued many other counties.”
The words above are quoted from an
editorial in which we endorsed county commissioners Steve Johnson, Godfrey
Williams, and Marvin Norman in the May primary. We believe they are just
as applicable to the November 7 general election.
Ideally, we would like to elect some
commissioners who would keep a tighter rein on spending than the present
board. But that is not the choice on the ballot this year. It is a safe
bet that the opposition candidates would spend much more and raise taxes.
Commissioners Johnson, Williams, and Norman are the better choices in the
upcoming election.
