Boone Report for Iredell County, NC

County saves $3.8 million

Boone Report Volume VII, No. 4                                                                          Fall  2006

In 1999 the county commissioners voted to make Iredell an “Electing County” under the state’s “Work First” program. While still subject to many state and federal restrictions, the “Electing” status allowed the county to adopt welfare policies stricter than the standard state plan. Last month, the commissioners voted to renew the county’s “Electing” status.

The Iredell Department of Social Services calculates that the county’s “Electing” status saved local taxpayers $782,109 in fiscal year 2005-2006. Since its inception, it has saved $3,820,661.
