We have not always agreed with the
current county commissioners. They have spent money we believe they should
not have spent and have made little attempt to control the burgeoning
residential growth that is overwhelming our infrastructure.
But in evaluating the commissioners,
it is only fair to bear in mind that theirs is a difficult job. They must
deal with the demands of growth, un-funded state mandates, and pressure
from special-interest groups. The differences between the geographic areas
of Iredell county make the job even more demanding.
Considering the challenges they
face, commissioners Johnson, Williams, and Norman could have done a lot
worse. They deserve credit for holding the line on tax increases. We
believe they have made an honest effort to consider needs and issues on a
countywide basis. They have had the good sense to avoid major missteps
that have plagued many other counties.
The challengers have their own
unique qualifications, but in our opinion none have made a case that they
would do a better job than the current board.
They may not be perfect, but in our
opinion Steve Johnson, Godfrey Williams, and Marvin Norman are the better
choices in the May 2 County Commissioner primary.
