In past issues, we have run several
stories about pay raises received by the ISS school superintendent and the
county manager. In most cases, the salary information was not reported by
the mainstream media.
Recently, the Record &
Landmark actually did something right. It published an article on the
highest-paid local government employees, and posted the salaries of all
such employees on its web site.
(The article did reveal the
newspaper’s liberal slant by whining that the highest paid local
government employees did not precisely reflect the ethnic and gender
makeup of the county.)
Mitchell Community College President
Doug Eason’s $146,941 salary makes him the top paid local government
employee. Iredell County Manager Joel Mashburn, at $141,601, and Iredell-Statesville
Schools Superintendent Terry Holliday, at $127,551, are next highest.
Eight local government officials
enjoy six-figure salaries, and 17 earn over $90,000. More than 400 are
paid in excess of $50,000 per year.
The chart below lists the number of
employees of local government entities in various salary ranges. It was
compiled from the information on the Record & Landmark web
site.
