Situations occur where grandparents
are not allowed to have contact with their grandchildren. In some cases
grown children have no contact with their parents. More commonly, the
parent who refuses visiting privileges for grandchildren is the son-in-law
or daughter-in-law, or girlfriend or boyfriend, of the grandparents’
adult child, or a step parent.
In North Carolina grandparents have
no legal right to see their grandchildren.
An Iredell County chapter of
Grandchildren/Grandparents Rights of North Carolina has recently
organized. The group meets monthly at the library. Its purpose is to serve
as a support group and to lobby the General Assembly for a law to allow
grandparents access to their grandchildren, on a case by case basis.
