Assembly seats will be held in districts that include
parts of Iredell County.
N.C. Senate District 42 includes Catawba County, Concord
and Shiloh Townships in West Iredell, and all of Iredell County north of
the S. Yadkin River.
The district is currently represented by N.C. Sen. Austin
Allran, a Republican from Catawba County. He has served in the Senate
since 1986, where he has compiled a solidly conservative voting record.
In his campaign literature Allran says he is “Pro-life, pro-traditional
marriage, and pro-Second Amendment.”
Allran is facing opposition in the Republican primary
from Kitty Barnes, Chair of the Catawba County Commissioners and a
former member of the Catawba County Board of Education. She promises to
provide “stronger, more effective representation.” In statements to the
press, Barnes indicated that she would have more success in getting
state money spent in the district because she would be better at
co-operating with the Democrats who control the General Assembly.
State Senate District 36 is centered in Cabarrus County
and includes all or parts of four Mooresville precincts. N.C. Sen.
Fletcher Hartsell of Cabarrus County currently represents the district.
Of the seven state legislators who represent parts of Iredell County,
Hartsell is likely the least known to local voters. He seldom if ever
visits or attends events in Iredell County.
Hartsell is facing opposition in the Republican primary
from Thomas Hill, also of Cabarrus County.
Mike Helms and Jim Johnson, both of Cabarrus County, are
competing in the Democrat primary in Senate District 36. Back in the
1970s, Johnson was elected to the state Senate as a Republican.
North Carolina House District 92 consists of Yadkin
County, parts of Surry County, and Eagle Mills, New Hope, Olin,
Sharpsburg, and Union Grove Townships in Iredell County.
The district’s current representative, Republican George
Holmes of Yadkin County, is retiring.
Darrell McCormick and Dempsey Brewer, both of Yadkin
County, are competing in the Republican primary for the right to succeed
Holmes. McCormick, a commercial real estate broker, is already attending
events and acquainting himself with people in Iredell County.
