Judicial races in North Carolina are now non-partisan,
but the political parties may endorse a candidate. If only two
candidates contest a seat, they are on the ballot in the general
election. If more than two candidates file for a seat, they are on the
primary election ballot. The two top vote-getters then face off in the
general election. This year, two statewide Court of Appeals Judge seats
are on the ballot in the primary election.
Incumbent Court of Appeals Judge James A. (Jim) Wynn, a
Democrat, is running for re-election. He is opposed by Dean R. Poirier
and Jewel Ann Farlow, both Republicans.
Incumbent Court of Appeals Judge John M. Tyson, a
Republican, is also seeking re-election. Three other candidates, one
bearing a famous name, are contesting the seat: Sam J. Ervin IV, Janet
Pueschel, and Kristin Ruth. Ervin and Ruth are Democrats. Pueschel is
not listed on either party’s web site.
